The latest horror film, The Conjuring: Last Rites, officially premiered in Indonesian cinemas starting Wednesday, September 3, 2025. Directed by Michael Chaves, this film highlights the real-life case of the Smurl family in Pennsylvania who experienced supernatural terror for over a decade. Simultaneously, “Last Rites” also depicts the final journey of renowned paranormal duo Ed and Lorraine Warren, portrayed once again by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga.
Set in 1986, five years after the events in The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, the story revolves around Ed and Lorraine Warren planning to retire from their demon-hunting career after decades of facing occult cases. However, their plans are disrupted when Jack and Janet Smurl seek help for the mysterious terror plaguing their family.
Initially, the Smurl family lived a normal life in their new home until a series of frightening events occurred. From falling lamps that injured children, horrifying screams, to pets being thrown against walls, the situation worsened with physical attacks on the children and claims of supernatural abuse.
After failed exorcism attempts, the case gained public attention through a popular television program. Ed and Lorraine intervened, discovering that the house was haunted by four entities, including one demon manipulating other spirits to destroy the Smurl family. Ed himself experienced a direct dark energy attack on his first night in the house.
In the midst of the dilemma to retire or continue the fight, the Warren couple must once again confront the darkest terror of their career.
Aside from Patrick Wilson (Ed Warren) and Vera Farmiga (Lorraine Warren), the film also stars Mia Tomlinson as Judy Warren, Ben Hardy as Tony Spera, and other talented actors.
With a runtime of 135 minutes, this Warner Bros Pictures production, with James Wan and Peter Safran as producers, includes a screenplay by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick.
Critical response to the film has been mixed, with some praising it as a fitting conclusion to the franchise, while others find it not as strong as its predecessors. The Conjuring Universe, since its inception in 2013, has expanded to include nine films, solidifying its position as one of the most successful horror franchises of all time.
